Heart and Soul

"Heart and soul, I fell in love with you...
Heart and soul, the way a fool would do...
Madly! Because you held me tight
And stole a kiss in the night.
"

Ivy Winthrop loudly sang at the top of her lungs. It was one of her favourite songs now that she heard it a million times. Julian Crane would usually play it on his radio or sing it in her ear in a lovesick, joking way.

"Honey! Julian Crane is downstairs waiting for you!" Ivy's Mother called out to Ivy in a loud manner. Ivy had heard the door belll ring several times but she just ignored it. She wanted to look extra special tonight for her date. Julian was so reasonable and caring...he wouldn't rush Ivy into anything she didn't want. He even got the hint that she wanted them to just be friends even though they had been on several dates. Ivy's heart belonged to Sam. At least that's what she'd tell herself over and over again. Sam hadn't replied to any of her letters at all. Ivy felt like she had to give up on Sam altogether and let loose....and that was excatly what she'd do tonight.

"I'm coming," Ivy rushed down the red-carpeted stairs and saw a handsome Julian waiting patiently by her Mother's side. He gave her a warm smile that made Ivy melt to the ground. Still, Ivy wondered what made Julian pick her over tons of other women. She knew for a fact that her other sorrority sisters such as Rebecca and Clarissa were green with envy that Julian would send expensive luxuries to Ivy. Yes, Ivy.

"Hello beautiful," Julian grinned and took Ivy by the arm in a gentlemen form. He always had taste in suits, Ivy observed.

"Now you two don't be gone too long," Mr. Winthrop chuckled and squeezed his hand around Mrs. Winthrop's waist. "And smile dear. You're suppose to be having fun,"

"Yes Father," Ivy let out a tiny smile and blushed a light shade of red. She often didn't want to be center of attention. She tightly held onto Julian's arm and motioned with to head towards the door but he stayed frozen in spot. He and Ivy's parents were starting a conversation. A dull conversation about The Crane Business, blah, blah. All Ivy wanted to do was just scream and leave out the door.

Keeping her cool, Ivy said goodbye to her Mother and Father and finally left with Julian. She eyed at his BMW. So shiny and expensive looking.

"You really do look beautiful tonight, Ivy," Julian kept on a smile as they got into their seats. Instead of starting the car like Ivy expected, Julian turned to his side and sniffed a lock of Ivy's hair and then the side of her neck.

"And you smell good too. What is that scent? Jasmine?" Julian leaned closer to get another smell of Ivy's neck. However, Ivy wished he'd just move away. She felt uncomfortable all of a sudden as her thoughts immediently driftted towards Sam. She remembered when he bought that perfume for her on her birthday. He too smelled her the way Julian was smelling her now. It brought back too many memories....

"Please Julian," she slightly pulled herself away instead. "Just start the car. My parents are probably watching our every move from the window," Ivy starred frontward, eyeing the side of the road. Why hadn't Sam at least called her? Let her know he was okay? Why wouldn't he just reply to her letters?

"Cheer up, Ivy. I hate to see you in pain....I know what will make you feel better," Julian turned on his radio and the song Heart and Soul started to play in a loud beat.

"Heart and sssoouuuullll, I fell in love with you heart and sssoouuulll, the way a fool would dooooo," Julian started to sing his little heart out, making Ivy burst with laughter at the tone of his voice and the faces he kept making.

"Oh Julian, you sure know how to cheer me up," Ivy cut in between giggles and tried to sing along with him.
